Every day is gouda at The Cheese Wheel, Greenville’s newest brick-and-mortar cheese shop on Augusta Road (1441 Augusta St.).
Kyle here. I got a sneak peek ahead of its grand opening Fri., Nov. 11 to get a slice of what to expect.
A family of fromage
The Cheese Wheel is the idea of owners Michael (Mike) Davitt, his mother Denise + Michael Hallisey. The three relocated to Greenville from Connecticut, where Mike received training as a cheesemonger (think: cheese specialist).
If you’re like me, you want to know why Swiss cheese has holes + the difference between a six-month aged cheese and a twelve-month aged cheese. Mike will answer your questions in detail, no matter how cheesy.
What to see (and taste) to brie-lieve
The shop features 200+ international and domestic cheeses and 10+ charcuterie meats, all of which are cut to order. Not sure what to get? Share your preferences and the team will slice any wheel or block for you to try. I went for a variety, including:
- Fromager d’Affinois, a French double cream soft cheese (like brie)
- Crater Lake Blue, an Oregon blue cheese
- Emmentaler - Le Superbe, a Swiss cheese
- Dutch Honey Bee goat gouda
- English white cheddar
You’ll also find shelves stocked with accoutrements, including everything from crackers to cheese honey, bottles of wine, accessories like cheese knives, refrigerators with grab and go charcuterie board fixin’s, and more.
What curd be next?
As The Cheese Wheel continues to grow, so will its services + footprint. Outside, Mike has plans to turn parking lot into an outdoor patio. Inside, plans include additional tables for sipping wines by the glass and for taking “build your own charcuterie board” classes, among other ideas.
The Cheese Wheel is open Wed.-Sat., 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Make sure to follow the shop on Instagram for updates, future events, and specials.
