South Carolina renters + homeowners who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic can now apply for assistance through SC Housing’s new SC Stay program.

The $25 million rental and mortgage assistance program, funded by the CARES Act, aims to help residents facing possible eviction due to the inability to make housing payments. Those eligible are able to receive up to six months of payments — at a maximum of $7,500 — that can be used to cover late and/or future payments.

Last September, the CDC placed a temporary pause on evictions nationwide that has been extended through March 31. Once lifted, it’s predicted that up to 180,000 SC residents will face eviction. SC Housing announced SC Stay in January in order to help residents stay in their homes during this challenging time.

Of the funds, 60% will be allocated to renters and 40% to homeowners, which are predicted to be distributed in the next 30 days.

To qualify, residents must:

  • Have an income at or below 80% of the county median.
  • Prove inability to pay all or part of rent/mortgage due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Have a landlord or lender confirm late payment status + agree to accept payments on their behalf.

Applications are now open and will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. See application checklist here + learn more about SC Stay here.
