In just a few months, Greenville will be getting yet another new spot that will make us even *boulder.* Enter Rockoon Climbing Community.

The 25,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to open at the Judson Mill (701 Easley Bridge Rd.) in May making Greenville home to the largest primarily bouldering gym not only in South Carolina but also throughout the southeast.

In addition to all the bouldering options, Rockoon will also boast —

  • A café serving Methodical Coffee + small bites
  • A mezzanine overlooking the gym where you can hang out or get some work done (with views of Paris Mountain)
  • Gym equipment (Think rowing machines, treadmills, free weights, etc.)
  • One 26’ section of top rope and auto belays
  • A competition wall
  • A fitness center (for workout classes or events)

While the layout of the handholds throughout the entire gym will change every five to six weeks (making it the perfect spot for the experienced climber), Rockoon will offer rental shoes, harnesses, chalk bags, and belay devices and encourages those with little to no experience to come by and *send it.*

The team (that includes some pretty cool people) is currently hosting tours of the facility so you can see what it’s all about + learn more about becoming a member. So, what’s with the name you might be asking? The Johnson family — the proprietors of this new endeavor — had a brainstorming whiteboard and one of their seven kids coined “Rockoon.”

Despite our team’s fear of heights (gulp), we’re really looking forward to spending some time here in the future. (And enjoying the new YMCA, feed + seed, pizzeria, brewery, distillery, and music venue, Cowboy Up, that will hopefully be open at the Judson Mill by the end of the year.)
