Join the sourdough revolution in Greenville

The bread type is reaching new heights in popularity, and we’re here to help you find the best loaves in GVL, or start making your own.

Two loaves of sourdough side-by-side on a wooden cutting board. One is cut in half, perched against the other at an angle. They have crusts and a sof interior, with a blurry light background appearing to be a window to outside.

Starter your engines. Sourdough is soaring in popularity, and according to Google Trends, so is interest in making your own — surpassing 2020’s pandemic-induced explosion in interest earlier this year.

If you’re among those baking some new habits into your life via flour and yeast, here are a few ways to get in on the action in GVL:

  • Front Yard Foods hosts frequent classes for beginners — the perfect way to get newbies introduced to the process alongside expert instructor Laura.
  • Once you’re a little further along, the fine folks at Le Petit Croissant are hosting a class for advanced bread makers later this year. The public class is BYOB, and if you’ve got a group of six or more people, you can book a session anytime.
  • Or get in touch with Simpsonville’s Flour Petals Sourdough for an intimate three-hour, hands-on, all-encompassing intro to the practice.

For those who prefer their loaves made by an expert, there’s a bunch of spots around town to get your fill of doughy goodness. We’re fans of Rise Bakery’s rotating seasonal selections, the rosemary sourdough loaves at Great Harvest Bread Co., and Travelers Baking Co.'s spectacular Everything is Awesome sourdough. If you want to sample the goodies from these spots, make sure to check out their ordering options. Sometimes, you need to plan ahead.

Pro tip: If you’re picking up some tasty treats at any of Greenville’s bakeries, from our experience, the apron-laden are typically willing to offer some friendly advice for beginner bakers eager to learn more.
