As the City of Greenville upgrades the Cultural Corridor — currently under construction to improve pedestrian access between Main Street and Heritage Green — another project aims to make Heritage Green “more recreational, more beautiful, and more safe.”
Heller Heritage on the Green honors the life and legacy of Max + Trude Heller, who fled persecution during the Holocaust and landed in Greenville, where Max served as mayor for two terms, and Trude educated the community about the Holocaust. The project features:
- An interactive children’s garden at The Children’s Museum of the Upstate (dedication planned for September)
- A digital exhibit at the Upcountry History Museum
- A “Dear Mrs. Heller” exhibit at Hughes Main Library (featuring letters from students impacted by Trude’s Holocaust education)
- Seating areas with quotes from Max Heller
- Mosaic tile art on stairways telling the Hellers’ and Greenville’s story
- A musical sculpture near the Sigal Music Museum
If funding is secured, the project will be completed by fall 2026.
