What will South Carolina’s transportation look like in 25 years? That’s a question the SC Department of Transportation is looking to answer now. Meet “Momentum 2050: Moving South Carolina Forward,” a comprehensive, long-term plan that will guide our state’s transportation system through the year 2050.

This Statewide Multimodal Transportation Plan, which is updated every five years, considers the evolving transportation needs of SC due to changes in population, economic shifts, environmental impacts, safety concerns, and travel behaviors. It looks at every mode of transportation (think: planes, trains, automobiles, and more).

The plan has four main goals:

  • Ensuring maintenance of existing infrastructure
  • Investing in our interstate system
  • Tackling traffic congestion in urban areas + enhancing access for rural communities
  • Collaborating with various modes of transportation

SCDOT leverages public engagement in this process, and you’re asked to fill out surveys, attend public meetings, and stay informed through the process. Step one? Share your public comments.
