On April 16, 1876, the YMCA of Greenville was founded in the basement of a local Methodist church on Buncombe St.

What started as a space for young men has grown into a $30+ million organization serving 85,000+ people across Greenville County.

A mission that evolves

For 150 years, the Y has adapted to the community’s needs while staying true to its mission: to build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, the YMCA of Greenville connects people across generations, backgrounds, and abilities.

Programs that inspire

  • Youth + education: Preschool, afterschool, summer camp, and SC Youth in Government
  • Health + wellness: Family branches, youth sports, aquatics, and fitness
  • Inclusion + community: RECESS program for adults with diverse abilities, LIVESTRONG cancer survivorship, and other evidence-based offerings

A legacy of innovation

The Y brought basketball and volleyball to Greenville, introduced the Boy Scouts, and continues to create signature programs that meet emerging community needs.

How you can help

From its textile roots to a hub of connection and opportunity, the YMCA of Greenville continues to strengthen the community one life at a time.

Building the next 150 years

As the YMCA of Greenville looks ahead, the focus is clear: building on a 150-year legacy while preparing for the needs of a growing community.

  • Deepen mission impact: Expand access, serve more people, and ensure every experience — from youth development to wellness to community engagement — is high-quality and life-changing.
  • Pursue operational excellence: Invest in staff, strengthen systems, and foster a unified culture rooted in accountability and purpose.
  • Build long-term sustainability: Grow philanthropy, partnerships, and investments in facilities and programs to support future generations.
  • The goal: To remain an indispensable partner in the community — mission-focused, operationally strong, and built for the future.
