Even despite hosting 34,556 fewer visitors this year, the Carolina Panthers training camp at Wofford College this summer had a record economic impact.

Clemson University tourism expert Bob Brookover took a deep-dive into the data. The increased economic impact generated by the 2017 camp was thanks to:

  • $10.764 million in spending (a 1.3% increase)
  • $732,000 in net local government revenues (a 1.4% increase)
  • $2.368 million in net state government revenue (about a 3% increase)

100,581 fans visited Spartanburg for the camp this year, in comparison to 135,371 in 2016 and to 77,625 in 2015.
According to the study, the Panthers camp created 266 jobs this year. That’s a big W for the Upstate, no matter how the NFL season turns out.
