24 of Greenville’s 37 parks are getting some accessibility upgrades and new features, like trail/court resurfacing and new playground equipment (some even have kid-sized ziplines), through Greenville’s $2.8 million Neighborhood Parks Program (NPP) initiative.
We spent last Thursday morning “testing out” the new equipment at four different parks.
🌳Juanita Butler Community Center | 2 Burns St
What we loved: The covered basketball court, which is prime for parents to stay cool and watch their kids on the playground (and y’know, basketball).
🌳Holmes Park | 111 Holmes Dr
What we loved: The tennis courts + disc golf course. Plenty of space for activities.
🌳Gower Park | 24 Evelyn Ave
What we loved: The baseball fields (also used as kickball fields) and the brand new bathrooms being built.
🌳Pinckney Fludd Park | 4000 Pinckney
What we loved: The piece of wall with paintings created by kids who wanted to see a park in their neighborhood. A real dream come true.
In-Progress Projects:
🌳Cleveland Park | East Washington and Cleveland Park Drive | 122 acres | The creation of a passive recreation space at the former stables site + the addition of 5 acres to the park including open lawn, native plant installations, rain garden, and a walking path.
🌳 Linky Stone Park | Reedy View Dr | The area of the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail between the park and Willard Street will be resurfaced to address safety issues regarding the rubberized surface.
Completed Projects:
🌳Cleveland Park | East Washington and Cleveland Park Dr |122 acres | The addition of new fitness stations along the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail
🌳Legacy Park | 336 Rocky Slope Rd | 20 acres | Parking lot resurfacing
🌳 McPherson Park | 100 East Park Ave | 12.5 acres | Renovation of 3 pedestrian bridges
🌳 Gower Park + Juanita Butler Community Center | 24 Evelyn Ave + 2 Burns St | 21 acres | These two parks have new playground equipment with safety surfacing and are the only two playgrounds with added ziplines.
Coming Soon:
🌳Unity Park | Bordering Hudson, Mayberry and Willard Streets | 60 acres | 10-story observation tower, splash pad, parking, veterans memorial | Costing $40 million | Opening of phase 1 in 2020
There’s still plenty of warm weather left to take advantage of the new park amenities. Check out a map of all the Greenville parks here. 🗺
