Planning to catch the eclipse from the top of a parking garage? Read this.

Only two (yes, two) downtown parking garage roofs will be open during the solar eclipse on the 21st.

The Commons garage adjacent to the Hyatt and the Poinsett garage will be the only two garages where the top deck won’t be closed off that Monday.

Why? Well, with 50,000 – 500,000 visitors coming into Greenville, things will get busy. Greenville public safety agencies will be out in full force. Hotels are booked, roads may be gridlocked, and there will be no such thing as a “normal Monday” that day.

All of the other garage’s top floors will be sealed off and staffed to prevent people from going up to them, Police Chief Ken Miller said. “The load of people moving around is different than the load caused by cars traveling to park.”

However, if you have your own rooftop, “planners should have the fire marshal inspect their roofs to determine how many people can be safety accommodated,” said Miller.

And if the worst happens (a.k.a it’s a cloudy sky), the Bon Secours Wellness Arena will serve as the inclement weather spot for Furman, where the eclipse will be livestreamed by NASA.

Pro-tip: Download the Greenville Police Department app so you can receive notifications of detours + emergencies day of. (Oh, and do not forget your eclipse glasses if you’re not planning to attend an event where they’ll be provided.)
