Meet the Furman professors behind the March Madness odds

If you follow basketball, you probably also follow ESPN’s Giant Killers blog. Little did you know, multiple Greenvillians are behind the bracket forecasts. Three Furman math professors provide complex metrics to calculate outcomes for the games.

In 2016, they predicted four upsets in the first round. Three of them, happened. What’s their most likely upset prediction this year you ask? The “Maryland-Xavier game” with a 51% upset probability; that is an 11 seed beating a 6 seed.

The method used is “protected proprietary information by ESPN.” So basically, these profs are part of the sports CIA.
