How are diners selected for “Top Chef?”

With the news that “Top Chef” is bringing season 23 to Greenville, there’s high interest in tasting the cheftestants’ creations during the challenges and events, but the process is cloaked in secrecy + bound by non-disclosure agreements.

“Get a job (at Whole Foods) and work as many shifts as you can,” one Redditor suggested.

When the news dropped on Wednesday, July 23 that “Top Chef” is bringing Season 23 to Greenville, the number one question we received (and spotted on social media) was “How can I attend an event?”

The short answer: We don’t know. We’ve tapped a few of our local sources, and production details seem to be under lock and key, but we’ve done some research to see how people have made it there in past seasons.

Based on this first-hand account we found from a taping in Denver in 2017, secrecy seems always to be the case. “We signed very stringent non-disclosure paperwork,” the audience member shared.

Although we don’t know for sure how audience members will be chosen this year, we’ve done some research to see how people have made it to the table in past seasons.

Win it in an auction

For the next few days, you can bid in an auction to win two VIP guest diner spots. We don’t know if this will take place in Charlotte or Greenville, but we do know it’s for the “Restaurant Wars” episode.

“As a VIP guest diner on the closed set, you’ll be immersed in the high-energy atmosphere of one of the series’ most anticipated challenges,” the listing shares. “Savor a multi-course meal prepared by elite chef contestants as they compete under pressure, and witness the unfolding drama from a privileged vantage point.”

At the time we’re typing this, the current bid is $13,500.

Know the right people

We know this isn’t the most helpful answer, but someone from Houston shared on a Reddit thread, “The only people we saw invited were other Houston restaurateurs and friends of said (restaurateurs)! I had friends in media that couldn’t even score an invite! Was a bummer.” Someone responded, suggesting that it may have been due to COVID protocols, since it was filmed in 2021.

In the same thread, “My parents... were invited by a family friend who’s the CEO of a PR/marketing firm that represents different chefs and restaurants in the area. They were invited very last minute, like two days before, and were told not to mention the event to others or on social media... Bet most of them are a secretive, invite-only type of thing.”

Keep an eye on social media

Someone on Reddit also shared that producers may post links on social media calling for diners. Though we couldn’t find any proof, it could be worth crossing your fingers.

Stakeout at Whole Foods

According to Eater, “If you live in Charlotte or Greenville, the best place to stalk the cheftestants is usually your nearest Whole Foods, as the chefs shop there before most of the competitions.”
