When a student hears the word “honors,” the first thoughts that pop up are likely pretty daunting – aren’t nightly homework and weekly tests enough? An honors program doesn’t always equate to more work + stress, though. At Greenville Technical College, honors classes are modeled after graduate seminars: small, highly participatory classes (15 students max per class) in general ed courses; built to enrich academic and personal experiences beyond the classroom.

Here are five reasons for future students to consider applying to Greenville Technical College’s Honors Program, offered each fall and spring semester:

👩‍🏫 Honors classes are interdisciplinary, meaning challenges and projects are shaped more like real-world situations that require teamwork and critical thinking. And we’ll bet that everyone in the group actually contributes to these group projects.

🏛️ Greenville Technical College offers the oldest, largest, and most fully developed Honors Program at a two-year institution in S.C. The program is also part of the National College Honors Council (NCHC), which sets professional + educational guidelines for Honors Programs and Honors Colleges nationally, and the Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC).

🎓 Ideal for transfer students

Most of their students each semester (including the ~60 students in the current class) are transfer students , a.k.a. those who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university. The program has transferred students to Clemson, Furman, UofSC, UofSC Upstate – and even elite institutions like the Naval Academy and Cornell University. Many of these students earn scholarship money based on their accomplishments from their time in the Honors Program.

✉️ Students receive comprehensive academic advising and mentoring, transfer assistance, as well as letters of recommendation by the Honors Program director – all of which really come in handy when it’s time to apply for a college transfer, a job, a scholarship or even grad school.

📖 Weaved in are opportunities to become more active in service learning, volunteering, and participating in cultural engagement, professional + academic events (like the annual Southern Regional Honors Council conference, the USC Upstate Research Symposium at USC Upstate, and the GTC Student Scholar Showcase).Browse the Honors Program brochure + learn more about the program by clicking here
