Project Update

Urban planning group PLUSURBIA DESIGN revealed what the future of the Greenville Gateway could become on Tues., Oct. 18.

After a series of community meetings and a survey earlier this year (which received 479 responses), the urban design group designed a future look for specific areas of the corridor, including:

  • Bon Secours Wellness Arena
  • East North Street (at the end of I-385 + continuing past The Well)
  • Pettigru Historic District

Some of the most notable changes proposed include transforming East North Street with trees, bike lanes + additional apartments and shifting Bon Secours Wellness Arena’s entrance into a pedestrian-friendly entertainment hub with restaurants and outdoor space.

Introduction to the Greenville Gateway Project

Picture this: you’re visiting Greenville and you just jumped into your Uber or Lyft to make your way downtown from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. As you come off of I-385 onto East North Street and look out the window, it’s possible you wouldn’t know that you’re just a mile from the heart of #YeahTHATGreenville.

Enter: Greenville Gateway. Since we mentioned we mentioned this new initiative, one that aims to reimagine the entrance to downtown from I-385 with features like pedestrian walkways, a plaza, restaurants, and housing.

Today, we’re talking specifics and how you can get involved.

The project, initiated by the owners of local automotive marketing agency DOM360, focuses on a specific corridor of Greenville between these streets:

  • North Church Street
  • East Washington Street
  • Atlas Street
  • Sunflower Street
  • Richland Way

Familiar places in this area include Bon Secours Wellness Arena, Greenville’s Law Enforcement Center, and the Pettigru Historic District.

PLUSURBIA DESIGN will help develop and implement this vision with private + public funding, and with input from community leaders, organizations, and you.

Here’s how you can share your input:

  • Attend the charrette: The project’s series of public meetings + open studio sessions takes place starting Fri., Feb. 18 and ends with a presentation and Q+A on Tues., Feb. 22.
  • Take the survey: Share your ideas + experience here — it only takes five minutes.

Click here to see what specifics will be discussed (like how the new development should be incorporated into the district), meeting and open studio times, and locations.
