Jason Hurdich first appeared on TV during coverage of Hurricane Matthew in 2016 as then- Gov. Nikki Haley’s American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. His charismatic, enthusiastic signing (due to ASL being his first language) captured Clemson University’s attention.

#DYK – Clemson has the only program in the state that teaches interpreters to work in the public school system?

He has also worked for the S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation Department as a certified deaf interpreter (CDI) + helped train members of the deaf community to find employment. Hurdich found that part of the problem facing the deaf community is that there is a shortage of ASL interpreters and only 60 or 70 certified deaf interpreters in our state. So he decided to teach at Clemson in hopes of inspiring more young people to become certified counselors for the deaf community.
