What our readers actually call things

Last month, we asked you what you, your friends, and your family call landmarks, streets, and businesses that aren’t their real names. Here’s what you said.

Last month (we think it’s crazy that it’s already September, too) we posted this reel on Instagram. Most of our comments were people telling us they still call The Bon Secours Wellness Arena (aka The Well) “The Bi-Lo Center.” That got our gears turning... what else do Greenvillians call landmarks and businesses that aren’t their real names. As good journalists, we asked.

“I still call the Greenville Convention Center ‘Textile Hall,’ because that was its name when I was growing up.” — Nancy K.

“My friends have called BlocHaven ‘the Bloc’ or a new favorite, ‘BlocHeaven.’” — Cole C.

“‘The Mimi Park’ — McPherson Park, where my daughter was taken by grandmother ‘Mimi’ to swing and dance in the gazebo.” — E. Mays

“‘The Shops at Gridlock’ rather than ‘The Shops at Greenridge’ on Woodruff Road. No explanation necessary.” — Chris G.

“When Linky Stone Park had the large bear carving, my little girl always asked to go to the ‘Winnie-a-Pooh Park.’” — Brian M.

“Even though it’s officially ‘Augusta Street,’ everyone calls it ‘Augusta Road.’” — Susan W.

Maple Street Biscuit Company is ‘Tiki Bob’s.’” — Russell

Harambe Memorial Bridge. It feels too right to be wrong.” — Kimberly C.

“This is G’ville and we drive on P’burg and take 85 to S’burg.” — Ali B.

“My hubs refers to Pleasantburg as the “burg of pleasantries”. So, that’s what we call it! — Jen F.

“When my son was first learning to read, he thought the neon Krispy Kreme sign said ‘Happy Home.’ He would always tell us he wanted to go to the Happy Home store, but we had no idea what he was talking about. We continue to call it that to this day.” — Christy S.
