It’s been 85 years since the Sisters of St. Francis were asked to come to Greenville to run a struggling hospital (the official anniversary was on Nov. 17 🎉). Since 1922, St. Francis has led the way for healthcare in our area.
In 1956, it became the first hospital to have an ambulance. A new hospital was opened in 1971, which was one of the first all-private-room hospitals in the Southeast. In 2000, the Sisters of St. Francis realized they didn’t have the capacity to sustain the hospital, so sponsorship of the St. Francis Health System changed hands to Bon Secours Health System – but they continued to serve the community in the best way possible. It became the first Upstate hospital with digital mammography technology in 2005.
While a lot within the healthcare system has changed, Bon Secours St. Francis has the same goal of serving needs in the community that they started with. The hospital seeks to promote wellness + care for all kinds of needs, including promotion of nutrition + wellness and working with local nonprofit organizations like Habitat for Humanity.
