An education crisis in S.C.

DYK – The starting salary for a new teacher is $29,900? However, 20% of districts pay below that mark. This might be behind why 38% percent of teachers left in their first 5 years + 12% left after a year or less. Last year alone, 6,500 teachers left their positions in the state.

So the Education Department is asking for a higher starting salary($32,000 compared to $29,900) for new teachers in its 2019 budget requests.

Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman also plans to ask lawmakers next year for a 2% raise for all teachers as well as a 6% increase for new teachers. The salaries would start in the 2018-19 school year and cost $54+ million. Worth it? We think so.
