All the cheese, none of the carbs

If you’re looking into healthy eating, ketogenic or low-carb diets have been making waves lately.

Why do people choose keto? Cutting out carb intake and upping healthy fats puts your body into ketogenesis, where your liver breaks down the fat into ketones. Those ketones are known to help break down stores of fat to use for energy instead of glucose.

Low carb diets are hard. Everyone loves bread (we’re looking at you, Oprah) and sometimes eating out while on a diet is difficult – so we put together some options in GVL for anyone on a keto diet.

Greenville food blogger @christeneats gave us some pro tips. First: you can really eat anywhere, as long as you cut the bread and starches and watch out for any sauces that sneak in sugars (like barbecue sauce 😭).

She suggests places that work with your diet and are open to letting you make modifications:

  • Farm Fresh Fast (they have a Farm Fit Bowl that you can customize)
  • Zoe’s Kitchen (chicken, shrimp + salmon kabobs for under 5g of carbs each)
  • Caviar and Bananas (design-your-own salad station)
  • Kairo’s Greek Kitchen (choose a veggie base, add protein + your choice of spreads and toppings)

You can even visit places like LTO Burger Bar and Grill Marks, as long as you drop the bun and substitute veggies for fries. Which Wich also has lettuce wraps instead of bread for all your sandwich cravings.

And go ahead and get those tacos from White Duck Taco Shop and ASADA, just swap out tortillas for lettuce tacos instead and pile on some guac and cheese for your fat macros. And a reader let us know that Upcountry Provisions lets you turn any sandwich into a salad (no bowls of plain lettuce here).

Not in the mood to hunt down keto options? Saskatoon Steakhouse offers a low-carb paleo meal plan so you can just pick up your dinner without stressing.
