The last thing you want during the holidays is a burst pipe, so our friends at Greenville Water put together a list of how prevent your pipes from freezing.

Before it freezes

  • Remove your hoses from faucets
  • Cover vents around your home’s foundation
  • Know where your water shut off valve is + test it
  • Keep the lid closed on your water meter

If it’s already frozen (below 32 degrees)

  • Drip faucets 24 hours a day (aim for five drops per minute)
  • Open cabinet doors under the sinks if you lose heat
  • If you have an attached garage, keep the doors closed

If you’re leaving for a few days

  • Shut your water off
  • Drain outside water faucets
  • Leave your heat on low
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks

If your pipe freezes

  • Turn off water immediately
  • Apply heat to the pipe using a space heater or blow dryer (thawing slowly is better.)
  • Once the pipe is thawed, slowly turn the water back on and check for cracks
