The last thing you want during the holidays is a burst pipe, so our friends at Greenville Water put together a list of how prevent your pipes from freezing.
Before it freezes
- Remove your hoses from faucets
- Cover vents around your home’s foundation
- Know where your water shut off valve is + test it
- Keep the lid closed on your water meter
If it’s already frozen (below 32 degrees)
- Drip faucets 24 hours a day (aim for five drops per minute)
- Open cabinet doors under the sinks if you lose heat
- If you have an attached garage, keep the doors closed
If you’re leaving for a few days
- Shut your water off
- Drain outside water faucets
- Leave your heat on low
- Open cabinet doors under sinks
If your pipe freezes
- Turn off water immediately
- Apply heat to the pipe using a space heater or blow dryer (thawing slowly is better.)
- Once the pipe is thawed, slowly turn the water back on and check for cracks
