One of the phrases Tommy Sinn often used was “let’s go play.” As a member of Poets and Pirates, a running group of 40+ men who start every morning at the Caine Halter Family YMCA, he would say it before an early morning 5 a.m. run or at one of the many races the group participated in together. Even after being diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014, Tommy inspired others with his words of encouragement.

Tommy’s words applied not only to running but also to giving back to the community. The Poets and Pirates have come together to raise thousands for nonprofit organizations. When Tommy signed up to participate in a marathon while he was sick, he asked his friends to sign up with him and (unknowingly) sparked a movement. Thirty-nine of the Poets and Pirates raced with Tommy and ended up raising more than $130,000 for the YMCA of Greenville and other organizations.

The group continues to give back. In order pay tribute to Tommy, who passed away earlier this year, the Poets and Pirates have established a new endowment fund that honors his active and positive spirit. The fund raises money for youth and Exercise Is Medicine programs at the YMCA of Greenville with hope that Tommy’s legacy will live forever through scholarships that will be made available in order to make healthy, active lifestyles accessible to all members of our community.

Help the Poets and Pirates honor Tommy by donating to the Tommy Sinn Fund and don’t forget to #goplay!
