Stone Takes Flight

Stone Mural Project

Four years down, eight to go. The public art power is alive and well on Stone Avenue with the contributions of the Stone Mural Project. The fourth mural of the twelve mural project is at the Hammack Law Firm at 223 W. Stone Avenue.

Caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. Murals require growth and development, just as butterflies do. Sunny Mullarkey McGowan, the printmaker behind the mural, taught the students at Stone Academy printmaking, in addition to creating her own prints for the mural. The mini version then translated into the large-scale version on the wall.

Every day is a new beginning: the words whimsically painted on the wall by Jean Wilson Freeman, the mural artist from the 2016 iteration of the project. This is the Stone Academy theme for the year and will forever live on Sunny’s wall. While the butterfly project will continue to grace Stone Avenue with its presence, I can’t wait to see what new creation will take flight on Stone next year.
