It shouldn’t feel normal to turn on the tv (or go online) + expect to hear (or read) about shootings. Hard to believe something so horrific has become so common. It’s also hard to believe that Greenville County was ranked number two as the most violent county in SC in 2015. Or the fact that firearms accounted for 78.9% of murder weapons used in S.C. in 2015. Jack Logan and the Put Down the Guns Now Young People Organization are aiming to rewrite these stats.

Logan started his organization in 2010, with the goal to educate teenagers to not pick up a gun until they are educated. In 2015, S.C. saw 13 juveniles arrested for murder compared to 6 in 2014. He believes that education programs will decrease this number gun violence amongst the youth + money going to the mortuary. He also believes that the height of murders of teens occurs right before graduation. Lots of teenagers will not get a chance to experience their first college party, take their first final, or experience their first tailgate.

Logan likes to travel to different schools and communities to spread his message. The group is supported by a huge banner which reads the organization’s name. The hope is to have kids see the banner + have a change of heart if they happen to carry a weapon. He also spends time going door to door seeking justice for murdered teens + educating the importance of gun locks. Gun locks are key in preventing guns from being used without permission + teens using guns with malice.

Logan planned to back away in October, but after a murder of Kiyounne Jackson, he knew that his work was not complete. He tries to get the youth involved in every way. The organization hosts job fairs + involve teens in their grassroots campaigns. This is a way to keep the youth from dangerous temptations + influencers.

If you are interested in becoming involved with the organization monthly meetings are held at the Augusta Road Library. Meeting dates + details are updated on the organization’s Facebook page. This is a great way to make a difference in our community + stomp out violence.
