Did you know that April is “National Financial Literacy Month,” “National Mental Health Month,” and “Pets are Wonderful Month?” Rightfully so, because the weeks ahead are filled with ways to give back, stay healthy + learn more about our community – and we already celebrate our pets every day (shout out to Caly, our office dog).

April 4 | 8:30 a.m. | Ciclops Cyderi & Brewery, Spartanburg

Participate in 1 Million Cups, a program by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The goal is to educate, engage and connect entrepreneurs with their communities, empowering them with the tools and resources to break down barriers that stand in the way of starting and growing their businesses. Apply to the Anderson Center by midnight April 4

Student-owned start-up businesses seeking funding can apply to the Boyd Venture Challenge. The seed-fund grant awards up to $20,000. The competition is hosted by the Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in UT’s Haslam College of Business.

April 7 | 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. | TD Convention Center | Free

Greenville Health System is hosting the 12th Annual Community Health Summit to raise awareness about diabetes and mental health. It’s also a venue for youth to learn about careers in health care. This year’s keynote speakers are known as “The Three Doctors.” Drs. Sampson Davis (an emergency medicine physician), Rameck Hunt (an internist) and George Jenkins (a dentist) are authors of the books “The Bond,” “The Pact” and the children’s book “We Beat the Street.” Registration is required through ghs.org/summit. Lunch provided for adults and youth ages 10 with registration. Groups, including churches and schools, can register by calling 864-832-0260.

The 4th Annual Neighborhood Conference is a free conference that gives citizens the opportunity to learn about Spartanburg’s everyday workings, like code enforcement, neighborhood associations, and fair housing. Breakfast + lunch will be provided, call 864-596-2052 for more info.

April 10 | 6 – 8:30 p.m. | York Technical College, Rock Hill

Join the class “Strengthening Your Business Foundation,” designed for business owners and aspiring business owners. The Winthrop Region Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and York Technical College are partnering for a “5 for $55” series of workshops (also on May 8, June 12, July 10 and August 14).

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) organizes a free presentation by persons living with a mental health condition called In Our Own Voice. Greenvillians who have experienced mental illness share their experiences and help shape perceptions of those with mental illnesses and raise awareness + understanding.
