Did you know? A recent policy requires that kidney transplant priority be given to candidates within a 250-nautical mile radius of a donor hospital. While intended to create more equity, it can be difficult for candidates who live on the outer edge of that radius.

Thankfully, the MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center launched a new kidney transplant program that widens transplant priority + shortens wait-times for the communities near Lancaster — while also giving GVL residents a closer proximity to a donor hospital (two vs. three+ hours to the Charleston center).

Joining some of the nation’s leading transplant experts, the Lancaster team:

  • Is led by surgeons certified by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, meaning they can handle even the most challenging cases
  • Offers one-stop-shop evaluation, testing, and education appointments
  • Is part of the Charleston team, which performed 410 kidney transplants in 2021 (ranking No. 4 in the nation in volume) and, in total, has performed 5,618 kidney transplant surgeries
