A famous South Carolinian is starring in Black WidowMarvel Studios’ newest movie that came out on July 9. Taking the big screen next to leading lady Scarlet Johansson is a BMW X3 that was produced right here at the plant in Spartanburg.

The sleek + agile X3 is prominently featured in one of the film’s chase sequences — take a look behind the scenes here.

This is BMW’s first time working with Marvel, but the famous car maker hints they’re “definitely looking forward to continue working with Marvel Studios” in the future.

However, our local BMW plant is no stranger to major Hollywood productions. A Z3 Roadster starred in the 1995 James Bond movie “GoldenEye” with Pierce Brosnan playing Bond. This model was built exclusively in Spartanburg from 1995 to 2002.

And before Black Widow, the X3 also had a role in the 2011 film “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.”

When else has the plant right up the road snagged a few minutes in the limelight?

  • In 2004, several different BMW models were used in “The Hire” — a series of 8 short films starring the likes of Madonna, Clive Owen, Gary Oldman, and more.
  • In 2007, the Z4 Roadster was featured in National Geographic’s “Ultimate Factory,” and later, in 2011, the X3 also made an appearance on the show.
  • In 2010, Martha Stewart + “The Martha Stewart Show” came to town, so the star could build her own, custom car.
  • In 2011, the BMW Super Bowl commercial was filmed both at the plant + in the Spartanburg area and featured the X3 and 5 associates.

All together, that adds up to be a lot more than 15 minutes of fame, but hey, who’s counting. 🤩
