DYK: South Carolina has more than 64,000 miles of streams and rivers? The Reedy River that flows through Falls Park is one of the defining factors of our downtown experience. But, like anything great in life, if needs TLC.

Rachel and Adam Engasser have been tackling water quality issues since 2005 and have ventured out every month to dozen of streams to sample for dangerous substances such as E. Coli, metals, and mercury.

Other students have joined the Engassers to form the Citizen Science in High Schools Aimed at Water Quality Testing group. They monitor 18 county streams and post their findings on a public database so health officials and researchers can use the data to monitor larger changes in the ecosystem.

Obviously, these young scientists are impressive. And, the Environmental Protection Agency thinks so too: They were awarded the 2016 Presidential Environmental Youth Award and plan to continue promoting environmental by getting students outside and involved. 👏🏽
