The Carolinas are no stranger to hurricane seasonbut Dorian has kept us on our toes. While we aren’t sure exactly what the storm’s impact will be, there’s one thing we can be certain of – Greenvillians will be looking to lend a hand to those affected.

We wanted to give you a quick update on some of the ways the Upstate is supporting hurricane relief efforts + a few ways you can get involved.

Prisma Health helps with evacuations

As part of the response to Hurricane Dorian, Gov. Henry McMaster ordered the evacuation of medical facilities in specific lowcountry + coastal counties. Prisma Health has teams from the Upstate and Midlands ready to help.

Prisma Health Richland Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care team + the LifeNet team are working to help move babies from affected areas. Prisma Health–Upstate has sent five critical care ambulances to assist with transporting patients.

Greenville Humane Society sheltering furry friends

Starting last week, the Greenville Humane Society began accepting transports of animals from shelters along the coast. 12 dogs came to the shelter on Friday and 50+ more animals are expected to come this week. All of the animals that come into Greenville from evacuation shelters will stay in Greenville until they find a home.

How can you help: If you’re looking to add a furry friend to the family, check their adoption information here. You can also make a monetary donation or donate supplies. If you’re interested in serving as a volunteer, you can find details on that here.

American Red Cross at the ready

The American Red Cross in South Carolina could send as many as 1,600 volunteers + 99 tractor trailers full of supplies to support relief efforts.

How you can help: You can support the American Red Cross through a monetary donation. You can donate frequent flyer miles to help fly in shelter volunteers from other states, or, you can participate in a blood drive.

Shelters + Airbnb OpenHomes

The S.C. Emergency Management Division currently has a number of shelters open across the state + spaces like the Charlotte Motor Speedway have joined in to help house hurricane evacuees. During emergencies, Airbnb also offers an OpenHomes program – where hosts offer free, temporary housing to those affected by the disaster and relief workers.

How you can help: You can participate in the Airbnb OpenHomes program by creating a listing here.

These are just a few of the many ways the Upstate is looking to support those affected by Hurricane Dorian. If you know of other ways to get involved, let us know below.
