Meet Reddit, a website for conversations a little more focused than comments on a Facebook post, but more casual + personalized than a forum.
A brief primer on how Reddit works: users subscribe to specific subreddits, which are individual communities for conversation about a certain topic, like r/worldnews, r/science, or r/aww. You create a discussion in a subreddit and users can comment + upvote or downvote the post, which is a good indication of how many people are interested or agree/disagree.
Today we’re looking at r/greenville, the subreddit dedicated specifically to Greenville, South Carolina. There are 5,600 people subscribed, asking questions, discussing news, and sharing photos. Here are five of the most interesting conversations we wanna hop in on.
🍝 Where’s the best Italian food in Greenville?
Skip past the reference to The Office and you’ll find Italian recommendations galore: Jianna, Da Vinci’s (on S. Pleasantburg Dr.), and Trattoria Giorgio got the highest number of upvotes. There was also the obligatory: “Olive garden, hands down. Two words: Unlimited breadsticks.”
🎷 What are your stories of downtown street performers?
Roundups of performers people recognize, links to their social media for folks who want to jam, and discussions of songs always heard on the street. Apparently “Do your thing guy” is a well-known downtown figure – one person said, “That man is a treasure and always makes me feel like dancin.”
👫 Where can a couple new to the area meet friends?
There’s lots of talk about forming a dogs + hiking hangout group, or meeting up at Unleashed Dog Bar for a drink. There are also some meetup groups listed and conversations about heading to a disc golf course to join in a game. What would y’all suggest?
🏆 What’s the most iconic thing about Greenville?
Some of the comments included: the Peace Center, Falls Park, the Army & Navy Store, the Swamp Rabbit Trail, and downtown as a whole. Points for originality to the person who proposed Wally Dog.
🍔 Where’s your favorite place to eat out in the Upstate?
A ton of people had thoughts on this, which isn’t surprising considering the amount of restaurants in our area. The comment with the most upvotes? “It’s hard to beat the duck at Trappe door.” Close runners up: The Pita House + Stella’s Southern Bistro in Simpsonville.
If you got sucked into r/greenville, here are a few other subreddits you might want to take a look at: r/southcarolina, r/asheville, r/columbiYEAH, and r/charleston.
And a bonus thread I think we all secretly want to read: “Good restaurants that offer LOTS of food for the money?” (Green Tomato Buffet and Saffron + Handi’s Indian buffets are all highly recommended.)
