Could South Carolina’s license plates be changing?

A bill was passed to redesign South Carolina’s license plates to “commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.”

We feel a change coming. Next year’s South Carolina license plate could change from the palmetto and moon design into a “commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.”

According to the House bill that was passed to commission the change, the new design would include:

  • “The design, emblem, seal, logo, or other symbol submitted by the South Carolina Revolutionary War Sestercentennial Commission
  • The words “Where the Revolutionary War Was Won”
  • “A flag featuring the word ‘LIBERTY’ in white against an indigo background with a gorget (think: a piece of protective armor) in an upper corner of the flag, also known as the Moultrie Flag.”

To become official, the South Carolina Revolutionary War Sestercentennial Commission has to send its design to the SCDMV + the bill needs to be enrolled and signed by Governor Henry McMaster.

If approved, the new plates will be issued from Jan. 1, 2026, through Dec. 31, 2032.

*Note: The original Moultrie Flag featured an indigo background with a gorget in the upper corner. The word “LIBERTY” was likely added later and wasn’t part of the original flag’s design
