GVL Gives: These nonprofits are doing good in Greenville

Our series highlights local nonprofits, what support they may need (think: donations, volunteers, board members) and the organizations they collaborate with and admire.

Friday, Oct. 10 is World Mental Health Day, so we’re kicking off this new series highlighting the work of local nonprofits with Gateway — an organization that’s been serving the Greenville community in this space since 1984.

What does your organization do?

At Gateway, we believe everyone deserves a place to belong, a purpose to fulfill, and a community that values them. As an International Clubhouse Model program, Gateway empowers our adult members — not patients or clients —to lead productive, meaningful lives through opportunities in education, employment, housing, and social connection.

What does your organization need?

We rely on Medicaid and Medicare and are looking to diversify our funding, referrals, and partnerships. We’re looking for local partners to help meet the needs of our members (like a dentist and a mammography truck) and as part of our Transitional Employment Program, while also finding new ways to connect with potential members. We don’t want to be the best-kept secret — we want to be known.

What’s another local nonprofit we should highlight?

The Family Effect is doing outstanding work at the Phoenix Center, focusing on family-centered care and supporting local children affected by addiction. We have members who volunteer with them.
