This weekend marked the start of football season here in South Carolina, and what a weekend it was.

  • The Clemson Tigers kicked off first Saturday and won their game in dominant fashion. The Tigers new quarterback, Kelly Bryant looked eerily similar to Deshaun Watson throwing for 313 yards and a pair of touchdowns; all before leaving the game in the 3rd quarter. Clemson beat Kent State 56 – 3 and will take on #12 ranked Auburn at home next week.
  • The Gamecocks took on N.C. State in Charlotte, N.C. in a game that had N.C. State favored by almost 7 points. However, USC started and finished the game in stand out fashion, returning the first kickoff of the game for a touchdown, and holding N.C. State in the red zone in the final minute of the game to prevent a game-tying touchdown. UofSC went on to win 35 – 28 and will play at Missouri next weekend.
  • For the first time since 1999, the Wofford Terriers took on a conference opponent in Furman University in week 1; and this game was a nail biter. With 46 seconds left on the clock, Furman’s Tristan Luke took a 44 yard run to the house to put FU within 1 (an extra point would tie the game). However, Furman decided to go for two (with potential to win the game) and ended up throwing an interception to Wofford’s Malik Rivera. Wofford went on to win the game 24 – 23. Wofford will be at Mercer next weekend, and Furman will take on Elon at home.

This weekend was all we could hope for in an opening college football weekend, and we’re pumped to see how the season unfolds.
