If you own property or a car, you’ll be interested in learning about two new fees Greenville County Council just approved on Wednesday.

💲 Property fee: $14.95 on each parcel of property you own (which will be on top of the taxes you currently pay).

Why? To raise money for a new telecommunications system for emergency personnel.

💲 Annual Road Maintenance Fee (the one you pay when you get your license plate): $25 (originally $15).

Why? As you may have guessed, the revenue gained from this increase will go towards resurfacing, widening, and making other improvements to county roads.

It turns out that things got pretty heated at the meeting. So heated that it led three council members to file a lawsuit claiming that the council failed to abide by the longtime “supermajority” rule when voting for the raising of these fees. Their attorney says they intend to amend the suit to challenge the validity of the newly passed fees.
