Netflix, Snapchat, Instagram, oh my. 📱 The rising cost of wireless data usage on smartphones, especially in heavily trafficked areas like downtown Greenville, is causing cell companies to think outside the box.

ExteNet Systems Inc. wants to solve the service problem facing Main St. with a unique solution: turning street lights into mini cell towers. 💡 The company wants to install 23 small antennas along Main Street to prevent the popular area from being overloaded with phone users, which will happen within the next couple years.

Verizon Wireless will utilize the mini cell towers, but ExteNet is hoping other companies will get on board once the program is up and running.

This is one of Greenville’s first moves to becoming a “smart city”, which will be essential as our population grows and our phones become even more vital to day-to-day life (if they aren’t already).
