In queso you didn’t know, tacos are one of our team’s favorite dishes. We asked our readers to spill the beans on where to find the best tacos in town and wanted to share your responses just in time for Taco Tuesday.
Beanough is beanough with the cheesy puns – let’s taco bout some tacos, shall we?
Our readers’ #1 choice: White Duck Taco Shop
Location: 1320 Hampton Ave Ext Suite 12B
Price: Tacos are $3.65-$5 each.
Pro tip: White Duck Taco’s location in Hampton Station makes it a family favorite – the outdoor area is perfect for kids, dogs + yard games. They have a great drink selection but you can also pair your tacos with a beer from nextdoor neighbor, Birds Fly South.
Must order: 2-3 tacos (there’s really not a bad choice on the menu) depending on your appetite. Reader faves are the jerk chicken or the steak + cheese. If you’re not feeling tacos, try their seasonal soup – Chilled Tomato Gazpacho (summer) or Southwest Corn Chowder (winter).
The hidden gem: ASADA
Location: 903 Wade Hampton Blvd.
Price: Tacos are $5.75-$6.50
Pro tip: Make sure to check out the artwork on the walls of ASADA. It’s created by co-owner Roberto Cortez who credits art as a principal inspiration behind ASADA’s cooking style. The art is available for purchase, with 15% of every piece donated to Cancer Society of Greenville.
Must order: All tacos at ASADA are “Mission style” – referencing the influence of the Mission District in San Francisco. Give the Carne ASADA or San Diego style Fish Taco a try, but keep an eye on the experimental specials menu. One of our go-to foodie gals Ariel Turner also recommends the Mole.
If you’re looking for the real deal: La Esperanza
Location: This is a food truck parked outside of La Esperanza Super Panaderia at 1152 N Pleasantburg Dr.
Price: Tacos are $2 each
Pro tip: Bring cash – credit + debit cards aren’t accepted here.
Must order: One reader described these tacos as “honestly the same you can buy on any corner in Mexico” + several other readers wrote in to let us know they’re the most authentic in town. The pastor is highly popular – you can also ask to add caramelized onion to any taco.
“I’ll have a margarita”: Tacos & Mas
Location: 1757 Woodruff Rd. and 802 S. Batesville Rd., Greer
Price: Tacos are $3.75-$4.50
Pro tip: While we’re talkin’ drinks, Tacos & Mas does have happy hour specials from 4-6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. This includes discounts on food + drinks, like a $4 house margarita or mojito.
Must order: Their drink menu features 10 margaritas, but the “volcano” is a must-try. It was voted the 2019 best overall cocktail by tacos & tequilas Greenville. To eat, start off with some homemade guacamole to go with the chicken eggplant taco or the pork belly.
The tried-and-true classic: Papi’s Tacos
Location: 300 River St.
Price: Tacos are $3-$4
Pro tip: Papi’s Tacos caters. Yes, that would be the tastiest event ever.
Must order: The Travelin’ Taco gives you shredded chicken, lettuce, pico de gallo + crema in a bag of Fritos corn chips – perfect for a grab-and-go option you can eat while walking through Falls Park. But if we’re being honest, you can’t go wrong with any of these menu offerings.
For tacos with a twist: Farmhouse Tacos
Location: 164 S Main St., Travelers Rest
Price: Tacos are $3.50-$5.50 each
Pro tip: Farmhouse Tacos is located off the Swamp Rabbit Trail in Travelers Rest, making it a great pit stop after a bike ride.
Must order: Their extensive taco menu includes unique combos like Chile Rubbed Tuna, Fried Avocado, or the Farmhouse Buttermilk Fried Chicken taco. Looking to spice it up? Try the barn burner sauce. If that bike ride left you particularly hungry, try the Farmhouse burrito bowl.
Trade your taco for a torta: Mextizo Tortas & Tacos
Location: 601 Haywood Rd.
Price: Tacos are $2 each
Pro tip: The menu at Mextizo Tortas & Tacos has a few things you may not have tried before – like flautas, sopes and tortas. If you’re not sure what to order – just ask. The friendly staff will help you navigate the options.
Must order: The veggie, chile verde, or carnitas tacos are team favorites. If you want to try a torta (described as a “Special Mexican Sandwich” with beans, tomato, onion, jalapeno, cheerse, avocado and mayonnaise) give the Al Pastor or the La Mexicana a shot.
