Living downtown on $10/hour

rendering for new building downtown

Remember the demolition of downtown’s Scott Towers? If not, here’s the lowdown: The public housing high-rise for seniors + disabled individuals, located where Dunbar Street hits Augusta Street (near Upstate Craft Brewery), was imploded in 2014.

Now the area is taking on a second life. 🎉 City leaders are turning their attention towards the housing crisis in GVL, focusing on more affordable downtown housing options.

Phase one of the plan is to provide affordable, subsidized housing for seniors + veterans. The second phase will focus more on the needs of essential workers like police officers, firefighters, nurses and teachers (those making $10 - $15/hour).

This plan will also create 2,500 affordable units for families making less than $20,000 (there are currently 9,000 families on GHA’s wait list).

💰 Price tag: $27 million+.

But where is that money coming from? The Greenville Housing Authority is looking at options like land contribution, fee waivers, real estate tax exemption, Inclusionary Zoning with funding requirements or private second money. Plus, there’s $2 million in Greenville City’s Housing Trust Fund.
