Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.

The Greenville News is bringing us back in time, introducing readers to 28 historic black churches, one for each day of the month.

“At one, a two-horse wagon turned upside down served as a pew. Another that predates the Civil War permitted slaves to worship with the white congregation until the freed former slaves established their own place of worship,” they write.
