There are some awesome grassroots workout movements happening all over the country, with a big thanks to the November Project that started in Boston and others like it. There are plenty of outdoor/inexpensive workouts in our lil’ city. Here are a few you guys have told us about. We know this isn’t a comprehensive list, so let us know what we’re missing.

  • Birds Fly South does $10 yoga and a beer on Saturdays at noon.
  • Soul Yoga + King of Pops holds free yoga classes on Thursdays at 7 p.m..
  • Community yoga classes in the Courtyard (by the Courtyard Marriott downtown) happen once a month.
  • Soul Yoga hosts community yoga at NOMA Square once a month on Saturday mornings.
  • Travelers’ Rest farmers market has classes every Saturday morning at 7 a.m. before the market. Classes rotate between yoga, crossfit, and boot camp.
  • Southern Om Hot Yoga offers some $5 classes on Saturdays
  • 90 Degrees Yoga also has $5 classes Friday – Sunday. (select classes only. See schedule here.)
  • There’s a running club that meets at Southern Pressed Juicery every Wednesday led by Kimberly Ruck with Greenville Elite Track Club.
  • Soul Yoga does a few $5 classes on Friday. Check the schedule to see which classes are discounted.

We also found out (thanks to y’all) about these fitness groups in Greenville that are similar to the November Project:

  • F3: A group of men who get together in small groups for workout and foster community leadership. Started in Charlotte, N.C.
  • FiA (Females in Action): FiA was formed by women who were inspired by their husband’s involvement and enthusiasm for the men’s fitness group F3. Also started in Charlotte, N.C. The Greenville group meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Legacy Park 5:30-6:15 a.m.

You know that feeling of having nothing to do the next morning and sleeping in until your eyes naturally open? Now think about the total opposite of that.

For the last few months, I’ve been swimming with the Greenville Splash team three times a week, from 6 – 7 a.m. at the Kroc Center (and doing yoga at Soul Yoga on in-between days). Waking up before the sun is hard, but meeting up with 10-20 people for a challenging workout is an amazing way to start the day. It sounds nice but let’s be real, we need some help staying in that routine.

November Project is a free grassroots fitness movement that started in Boston that has spread to 27 other U.S. cities, founded on accountability + community. If you tell your workout buddies that you’ll be there, you’d better be there – or risk seeing your face on the “we missed you” page (or getting a personal call from a member). But this isn’t just for super-intense workout people. These programs are meant to be scaled to work for any fitness level, and to be done anywhere (a park, a parking garage or lot, a running trail, etc.) All you have to do is show up.

So we were wondering if Greenville has any grassroots (read: not sponsored by a gym + workout center) high-intensity interval training (HIIT) communities of people who are just trying to get in a good sweat before the sun comes up. Have you heard of anything like these workout programs in Atlanta or the November Project? Let us know. 🏃🏽‍
