If we told you that City Council and Mayor Knox White haven’t received a raise in 24 years, would you believe us? What if we also told you that our council + mayor make less than that of councils in comparable cities such as Rock Hill, Mt. Pleasant, and Columbia? And, less than half of what the Greenville County Council makes.

Well, it’s true and some City Council members are looking for a little change. Here’s how the salaries stack up –

City of Greenville

  • Council: $11,772
  • Mayor*: $19,073

Greenville County

  • Council: $28,493.73
  • Council Chairman: $34,192.60

Rock Hill (Note: Charlotte, N.C. suburb’s budget = $225.8 million, while Greenville’s is $168.4 million)

  • Council: $16,819
  • Mayor: $26,416

Columbia

  • $13,350
  • Mayor: $75,000

Mount Pleasant

  • Council: $15,000
  • Mayor: $42,000

Summerville

  • Council: $7,956
  • Mayor: $47,740

Currently, no formal proposal for an increase has been made, but consideration will be given at council’s meeting in October.
