The engineers behind Greenville: Celebrate E-Week

Coming together for STEM education

We celebrate a lot of “weeks” here in Greenville: restaurant week, Artisphere, Fall for Greenville, Fashion on the Town week and more.

But what about celebrating the people who build our roads, design our dams and inspire the next generation? Enter Engineers Week, or E-Week, which runs from February 19 to February 25. This global initiative celebrates how engineers make a difference in our world and brings engineering to life for kids, educators and parents alike through the High School Friendly competition in which students from three local high schools have the opportunity to work in teams to plan, design, construct, test, and ultimately compete for prizes.

A local proponent of E-Week is a name you know: Fluor. Fluor is one of the world’s largest engineering companies, with more than 60,000 employees located on six continents around the globe. The Greenville office, which employs approximately 2,000 people on its 77-acre campus, serves as the company’s operational hub for Power, Infrastructure, Mining & Metals, Life Sciences & Advanced Manufacturing, and Government.

Locally, Fluor provided design and construction services to the BMW Manufacturing plant in Spartanburg, and provided engineering and program management services to the SCDOT (South Carolina Department of Transportation) Construction and Resource Management Highway Program and much more. But equally as impressive is that Fluor has contributed $8.5 million to community organizations, programs and educational initiatives (in 2015), and employees have contributed approximately 44,000 volunteer hours in the Greenville community.

In 2015, Fluor and its employees provided more than 86,000 students with more than 1.9 million hours of STEM training through schoolbased curricular enhancements, outreach and outofschool time activities.

We’re a smart community and getting smarter.
