Greenville Health System has announced that it will be teaming up with the University of South Carolina.

Their goal? To bridge the gap between GHS’s Health Sciences Center and UofSC’s School of Medicine to commercialize medical technologies, as well as research into treatments for cancer, diabetes, as well as other conditions.

UofSC’s Office of Economic Engagement plans to work with GHS in identifying funding opportunities for clinicians interested in launching startups, such as IMCS and Tcube Solutions, a Columbia-based IT firm that specializes in property and casualty insurance software and services. According to UofSC’s Executive Director of Economic Engagement, this will help clinicians take “innovative healthcare inventions” from concept to the marketplace more quickly.

One example of an innovative incubator that stands to benefit from the partnership is the GHS Institute for Translational Oncology Research and its collaboration with KIYATEC, who uses 3-D cell modeling to determine how tumors respond to cancer medicines. Think major funding opportunities.
