Cooper White, Greenville’s first Republican mayor has passed away. His claim to (Greenville) fame? Leading the community through the desegregation of public schools in February of 1970.
In fact, the first day of public school integration, CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite praised Greenville as having integrated its schools that day “with grace and style.”
He followed his Grandfather’s footsteps, H.S. Harvley, who was mayor from 1917 – 1923. And, his campaign manager, Carroll Campbell, went on to be governor from 1987 – 1995.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Augusta Road. Memorial gifts can be made to Meals on Wheels or Triune Mercy Center.
