Reedy River: “More than just a scenic downtown attraction”

The Reedy River runs 75-miles, begins in Travelers Rest, and flows through the City of Greenville to Lake Greenwood.

Why aren’t there more access points to the river? The only other than downtown is Cedar Falls Park in Fountain Inn.

According to Heather Nix, director of the clean water program for environmental advocacy group Upstate Forever, the river needs to be clean enough for recreation promotion to create public access points.

Much of the river is listed as “impaired,” which signals possible health risks. This comes from historic pollution from nearby textile mills + runoff from urbanization. (And dog poop, which has lead to high E. Coli bacteria.)

Community organizations, the city, and county, have been working together to improve the water quality, including a cost share assistance program to help home and business owners repair or replace their failing septic tanks + other water management practices.
