News Notes

Announced
  • Artisphere will announce which artists landed a spot at this year’s festival tomorrow, Feb. 1. Before 140+ artists can take over Main Street from Friday, May 10-Sunday, May 12, a jury review determines who makes the cut. Festival organizers call jury weekend the second biggest weekend for the festival.
Seasonal
  • Believe it or not, spring is right around the corner. If you’re wondering what to plant in the coming warmer months, consider replacing those invasive plants with plants native to SC like hydrangeas, dogwood trees, and sweet shrubs. (The Post and Courier Greenville)
Civic
  • Have you ever wondered what Greenville’s Design Review Board process is like? Our friends at Upstate Business Journal knew you had, so they put together a step-by-step breakdown of the process — from gathering public feedback to approvals + denials.
Number
  • $1,108,694. That’s how much funding is being distributed to Greenville in FY2024 through the Carbon Reduction Program. A few months ago, you told us how you’d like to see the funding utilized.
Eat
  • Stop by Topsoil Kitchen & Market, which was named a James Beard Semifinalist last week, on Wednesday, March 13 for its Plant Based Supper Club. The theme is “Roots Dinner,” and you can sip on a welcome cocktail, listen to live music, + chow down on sweet carrots, radishes, beets, and turnips.
Feel Good
  • Nice kicks. Every student (500+) at Berea Elementary School got a new pair of shoes last week thanks to Samaritan’s Feet International — a humanitarian aid organization — and Communities in Schools of SC. Berea Elementary is a Title 1 school, meaning ~40% of students are classified as “low-income.” (Greenville Journal)
Outdoors
  • Upstate Forever — a local conservation non-profit — announced its conservation efforts reached 783 acres across the Upstate last year. In Greenville County, Upstate Forever helped preserve Horsepen Creek II, Meadow Fork Creek Forest, Saluda Dam Acres, Beaverdam Creek Preserve, and Blackwell Farm. View the entire regional impact.

Finance
  • One card, all the perks. Unlimited 1.5% cash back, a sign-up bonus worth hundreds, and 0% intro APR for 15 months (all with no annual fee) almost sounds too good to be true — but this card has it all.*

Ice cream from Clare's Creamery in the Overbrook neighborhood of Greenville, SC
We’ve got the scoop on Overbrook. | Photo by GVLtoday
Save the date. Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is right around the corner, Saturday, Feb. 3.

First celebrated in the 1960s when a Rochester, NY family ate ice cream for breakfast during a blizzard, the informal holiday aims to “liven up the first weekend of February with something silly and sweet.”

Here in Greenville, you can celebrate with a scoop, sundae, or pint from one of these sweet spots:

Clare’s Creamery, Multiple locations

Opening at 9 a.m., bring the family for breakfast-inspired ice cream flavors, sundaes in Clare’s mugs, plus coffee from Bridge City Coffee so you still get your morning cup o’ joe.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, 12 E. Broad St., #6B, Greenville

Opening at 9 a.m., there will be breakfast flavors like Balanced Breakfast — a delicious mix of banana french toast, coffee with cream + sugar, and darkest chocolate in a french toast waffle bowl. Jeni’s encourages you to wear your pj’s.

Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery, 205 Cedar Lane Rd.

Get soft-serve ice cream from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. ($1 off if you wear your jammies), sip on vanilla affogatos from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., and get $1 off pints of Jeni’s ice cream from the grocery.

Have a favorite local spot where you’ll be celebrating? Give us the scoop.
