Restaurant Week South Carolina kicks off Thursday, Jan. 12 and runs through Sunday, Jan. 22.

Whether you’re looking to try something new or visit an old favorite, participating restaurants offer special deals (think: three courses for a set price or dinner for two at a discounted rate) to entice Greenvillians to get out and eat local.

Pro tip: Bookmark the full lineup to peep the menus and make reservations.

Clayton’s Deli, 1628 E. North St.

We were excited to see this casual lunch spot in Overbrook on the Restaurant Week lineup. You can’t go wrong with any of the $12 lunch specials — which come with a side and a tea. We’ll be trying the “Mama’s Boy” — house-made meatloaf, onion bacon jam, tomato barbecue sauce, and sharp cheddar cheese on sourdough sandwich bread.

Indulge in three courses for $45. We’re starting with the yellowfin tuna crudo (with mango, shallot, fresno chile, and lemon gel), then enjoying the fusilli (with lamb sausage, fennel, piquillo peppers, and pecorino romano), and finishing with the key lime panna cotta (with cherry compote and almond crumb). Don’t forget the wine pairing for an additional $25.

Three courses for $60? Yes please. Chef Haydn Shaak had us at brussells + pancetta (with calabrian chilis, wildflower honey, fennel pollen, and pecorino), whey braised short rib (with lardo potatoes, wild mushrooms, shallots, and truffle demi), and apple olive oil cake (with salted whey caramel, pistachio butter, and cinnamon whip).

United against flood damage

How Greenville, SC’s Unity Park was designed to handle flooding

What a difference 24 hours can make. | Videos by The City of Greenville
The chances of rain this week are much lower than the last when Greenville received ~4 inches of rain causing flash flooding, especially in areas around the Reedy River.

City engineers say there will always be times when a river exceeds its banks, because that’s what rivers do, but it’s about how leaders and engineers can plan ahead to minimize damage:
  • The city built Unity Park in a floodplain because parks recover quickly after taking on water, unlike buildings and other properties.
  • Along the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail, engineers designed river benches to give the water a place to go in weather events that cause the river to rise, protecting businesses at The Commons.
  • From Unity Park’s electrical systems to the soil mixture to the furniture and structures to the plants and trees, park designers made choices that withstand the rising Reedy River during a weather event.

Editor’s pick: One of my favorite things about working at GVLtoday is exploring what’s new on the food scene, like that delicious preview of The Jones Oyster Co. I especially love Restaurant Week because it’s an excuse to go back and visit familiar favorites I may not have been to in a while. Where are you making reservations? Let me know.
