Gov. Henry McMaster’s two-years worth of missing emails might be a sign of government agencies struggling to keep up with technology.

The now-Governor’s emails should have been archived from his time as lieutenant governor. However, they were auto-deleted before they were archived, which likely violates S.C.’s public records law.

With thousands of emails each day, the legislator uses a third-party agency to manage their archives. And to save space, they have a 180-day retention policy.

According to McMaster’s spokesperson, the governor had no personal involvement in deleting the emails.
