Medical marijuana, Here?

The State
Wednesday, a state Senate panel held the second hearing to listen to the testimony of medical experts, who expressed both support and concerns for a proposal to legalize medical marijuana in South Carolina.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • This proposal favors the legalization of medical marijuana, not for recreational use.
  • Many of the speakers in favor of the proposal argue the drug will help those being treated for chronic pain (rather than using opioids).
  • Those opposed stated that their is a lack of medical research and that policies and procedures are not in place to keep it out of the hands of abusers.
  • Even if a bill was passed legalizing medical marijuana, physicians are not able to write a prescription for the drug. They can only write recommendations for it to be used at a registered marijuana dispensary.

The five hour hearing ended much like the first, without taking any action on the proposed bill.
