Let the Mardi Gras festivities begin

The State

The Mardi Gras Columbia Parade & Music Festival is this Saturday and it’s the perfect excuse to party New Orleans-style with a parade and live music at City Roots Farm. Bonus: admission is free. Double bonus: Any money you do spend on say, beignets goes to the charity, Congaree Riverkeeper.

If you are looking to get some exercise before indulging in beer and Cajun style food, register for The Lagniappe 5K. “Lagniappe” is a Louisiana French word meaning bonus or extra gift. Bonus: Your dog can run with you! Double bonus: River Rat beer at the finish line.

Greenville isn’t missing out on all the fun though. Enter: the 4th Annual Big Easy Costume Ball at Artistry Workshops and Gallery. This event features live music, a Tiny Mardi Gras Float exhibit, and adult face painting (because this party is for adults only). Tickets are $20 at the door. Bonus: Wholy Smoke Food Truck will be there.

Swamp Rabbit Cafe and Grocery is partnering with the Greenville Jazz Collective for a Mardi Gras Party starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Wearing a mask is not required but why not? It’s easy to get into the New Orleans spirit, especially if you are munching on beignets, King cake and Mardi Gras-inspired pizza!

Bonus: Gumbo.
