One of the biggest challenges for Greenville’s employers is attracting + retaining a solid workforce. Our local industries – like manufacturing, construction, and healthcare – need skilled employees to thrive. Makes sense, right?

LaunchGVL, an initiative by Greenville Chamber + Greenville County Schools, aims to help shrink the gap through a work-based program for high school students. Paid work opportunities and relevant classwork mean they’ll gain experience, make connections in their industry, and graduate with a major advantage.

Recruitment for the fall semester is currently underway. We talked with Greenville Chamber to find out the deets:

Q: How will LaunchGVL’s success be measured?

A: In the short term, we will measure the success of programs by the number and diversity of participating businesses our goal is to have representation from all of Greenville’s industry sectors. At the experiential level, we are evaluating student and businesses feedback on the program to ensure that the program is beneficial for both and a true work-based learning experience that complements students’ education.

In the longer term, the program’s success will result in stronger pipelines of Greenville’s students pursuing the vast career opportunities right here at home.

Q: Have any stats (anything really, past performance, local schools, etc.)?

A: The first cohort of students are participating in LaunchGVL internships this summer. Eleven students are in the first cohort, though more than 80 students signed up to participate. Students ages 16 and older in all 14 high schools in Greenville County Schools are eligible to participate. Those who have taken coursework through Greenville County Schools’ Graduation Plus Initiative will have the best shot at being selected for the internships.

Q: How is the program being funded?

A: The program is a partnership between the Greenville Chamber and Greenville County Schools, so the administrative costs are shared between the agencies. Students are paid directly by the business that hires them.

Q: How does a business get involved to offer internships?

We are actively recruiting businesses now for the fall semester. To sign up to host interns or get more information, businesses can visit the program website.

Bonus: LaunchGVL only offers paid internships, so if you know someone looking for experience (and to make some $), check out LaunchGVL’s FAQs.
