So you’ve packed your hiking backpack + some snacks in the car and you’re headed out to Jones Gap State Park to check out the 60+ miles of trails like the real wilderness explorer you are. Then you pull up to see a long line of cars because the park’s 36 parking spaces are full, which happens quite a bit when temps start to rise.
The good news is, the park is about to get a 25% size increase. The Nature Conservancy, a Virginia-based environmental nonprofit, will purchase the 955-acre property between Jones Gap and Caesars Head, known as Gap Creek. The flat land is ideal for building more visitor facilities, trailheads, and parking. 🙌🏽
Gap Creek was previously under private ownership + is the largest piece of unprotected land within the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. The property will be transferred to the state park system this year.
